What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

National asylum granted under the Act of 13 June 2003 on Granting Protection to Foreigners within the Territory of the Republic of Poland; the Office for Foreigners states it should not be confused with international protection (refugee status and subsidiary protection).

Asylum is granted when it is deemed necessary to provide the foreigner with protection or when the vital interest of the Polish state so requires.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

The application may be submitted while staying in Poland or while staying abroad, directly to the Head of the Office for Foreigners. There is no dedicated form; the application must contain personal details, the country of origin and the key events on which the request is based. An applicant abroad attaches a photograph and, after arriving in Poland on a national visa to take part in the proceeding or because asylum was granted, has fingerprints taken.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

An applicant in Poland must have fingerprints and a photograph taken, handled by the Border Guard commander with territorial jurisdiction over Warsaw; if these obligations are not fulfilled the application is left without consideration. The application may also cover the spouse (with the spouse's written consent, which acts as a power of attorney) and minor children. Unaccompanied minors have an additional right to a temporary Foreigner's Identity Certificate and to social assistance. The official source does not state support or rights for adult applicants during the procedure.
