What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

This is the international protection (asylum) procedure: an application for international protection is lodged with the Head of the Office for Foreigners through the Border Guard, and once the application is accepted the procedure examining it begins. The official source does not state what refugee status and subsidiary protection each involve.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Through the Border Guard: at the border during border control, at any Border Guard unit or outpost while in Poland, or with the competent Border Guard chief when in detention. Persons who cannot come in person (disabled, senior, pregnant, single parent, hospitalised, detained, etc.) may send a written declaration by post or e-mail. Unaccompanied minors apply through a guardian or an assisting organisation.

    Lodging an application for international protection is possible: when entering the territory of the Republic of Poland during border control (a Border Guard officer must be informed about your intention to apply for asylum), during your stay in the territory of the Republic of Poland you need to visit any Border Guard unit or outpost, with the chief of a Border Guard Service division or outpost whose operations cover the territory in which a detention centre, a deportation detention centre, a remand centre or a correction unit are located

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Registration immediately, within 3 working days (10 working days in a mass influx); family members included must be present. Photographing, fingerprinting (over 14), medical examination and an interview on the responsible country follow. Each adult receives a temporary certificate of identity authorising stay in Poland. Applicants may be detained for 60 days by court decision; those not detained may receive social assistance and medical care from the Head of the Office for Foreigners.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

The Border Guard receives the application; the Head of the Office for Foreigners (Office for Foreigners, UdSC) examines it and provides social assistance and medical care. For unaccompanied minors, a guardian or an international organisation or NGO providing assistance, including legal assistance, may lodge the application.
