For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

Every person arriving at Pitcairn Island, except those with the right of abode, permanent residence or an exemption under s 15(2) of the Immigration Control Ordinance 2006, must obtain leave to enter. An immigration officer decides short-term visitor visas at the border.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

It is a condition of every short-term visitor visa that the holder not engage in any work or business activity on the Island unless granted a work permit under s 9(1)(d) of the Immigration Control Ordinance 2006. The official source does not list the permitted visit purposes.

    9.4 In addition to the conditions set out in section 4.1 of this Policy, it is a condition of every short-term visitor visa that the holder not engage in any work or business activity on the Island, unless they have been granted a work permit in accordance with s 9(1)(d) of the Immigration Control Ordinance 2006.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

The traveller must depart on the same vessel they arrived on, present a valid travel document to an immigration officer on arrival, and meet the character, health, travel and medical insurance, and financial capacity requirements unless waived by the Governor. For financial capacity, they must provide either evidence of sufficient funds for maintenance and accommodation for the visa duration or a written sponsorship undertaking for maintenance and accommodation.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

An immigration officer decides short-term visitor visas at the border. All applicable fees are paid on arrival unless the Chief Immigration Officer has authorised other arrangements. The fees notice sets the short-term visitor visa application fee at NIL and the extension fee at NZ$150. The official source does not state when an extension is available or its conditions.
