What family, citizenship, ethnic, historical or former-resident connection creates access to this route?

A former Filipino citizen who was naturalised in a foreign country and comes or returns to the Philippines, together with his or her family, qualifies as a 'balikbayan' (the term also covers a Filipino citizen continuously out of the Philippines for at least one (1) year and a Filipino overseas worker).

How far back can the qualifying connection extend, and what important transmission limitations exist?

Reach is limited to the balikbayan's own spouse and children who are not balikbayan in their own right and who are travelling with the balikbayan to the Philippines.

What records are central to proving the lineage or historical connection?

A foreign passport holder shows the passport plus any of: old Philippine passport, foreign naturalisation papers showing former Philippine citizenship, or a certification from the embassy or consulate of the adoptive country that the person is a former Filipino citizen. Accompanying family members show a passport plus a birth certificate (children), marriage certificate (spouse) or adoption papers (legally adopted children).
