What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Asylum/refugee status: legal statuses granted by the Peruvian State to protect their holders; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs grants refugee status after assessment. Applicants need no visa or migration status for admission and stay while applying.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Answer not available

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Must be requested in person and in writing at the border or inside Peru; it cannot be requested from outside Peru, and regular entry is not required. In Lima, at the Protection Spaces (Lima Cercado, San Juan de Lurigancho, San Martín de Porres), walk-in without appointment; elsewhere at the Foreign Ministry's decentralised offices (ODE). People requesting at the border are allowed to enter and cannot be rejected or returned.

Limits of the record
  • Source is UNHCR (UN body), not a Peruvian government page.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Family members present are listed in the same application. Information is confidential and not shared with the country of origin. Authorities receiving the request forward it to the Special Commission for Refugees (CEPR). While the case is pending, the State grants a provisional document; a virtual work authorisation is issued by CEPR after registration. Recognised refugees receive a foreigner ID card and may request family reunification.
