Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Protection is requested by contacting the police. As of 15 July 2024, anyone applying for protection must go to Råde to register the application at the National Arrival Centre. Children travelling alone (unaccompanied minor asylum-seekers) can get help to travel to the National Arrival Centre.

Limits of the record
  • The first two sentences are the general UDI instruction for all applicants, not a child-specific text; child-specific procedure (asylbarn.no) was not captured.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

An unaccompanied minor has the right to a representative in Norway, an adult who acts on their behalf and looks after their rights legally and financially, and will also be appointed a lawyer. If the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) doubts whether the child is below 18, an age examination (X-rays of the hand and teeth evaluated by a doctor) is offered; declining it may affect the asylum case.
