Exceptionally, persons not in education may get a permit to undergo vocational training under a contract between their employer and companies in Norway; trainees placed under intergovernmental agreements binding Norway may also be granted permits regardless of the ordinary limits. The official source does not state the host-employer requirements for the ordinary student-trainee case.

What work does the permission allow? Is the holder tied to an employer, occupation or sector? Can family accompany where clearly established?

The permit covers full-time work as a trainee, relevant to the trainee's education, for only one employer; remote work is not allowed unless it is part of the job the permit was granted for. Spouse or cohabitant and children can usually apply to come and live with the trainee in Norway, and if they apply at the same time they receive the answer at the same time.

How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

Trainees can normally get a permit for up to six months and no more than twelve months in total; the permit cannot be renewed and does not form a basis for permanent residence.
