What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

This route is a residence permit under section 38 of the Immigration Act (utlendingsloven § 38) that forms a basis for permanent residence.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

A foreign national who seeks protection after testifying as the aggrieved party in a court case where charges under section 257 of the Penal Code (human trafficking) have been brought. Also, potentially, a foreign national who has given a statement to the court or police in a criminal case, where it is made probable that the person was a trafficking victim and the statement relates to this; the person must have broken with the trafficking environment and no special reasons may weigh against a permit.

    Selv om vilkårene for oppholdstillatelse etter første ledd ikke er oppfylt, kan det innvilges oppholdstillatelse til utlending som har avgitt forklaring for retten eller for politiet i en straffesak, dersom det er sannsynliggjort at utlendingen har vært offer for menneskehandel og forklaringen har sammenheng med dette. Det er et vilkår at utlendingen har brutt med miljøet bak menneskehandelen og at det ikke foreligger særlige grunner som taler mot at tillatelse gis.
