What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

This route is a residence permit called a reflection period (refleksjonsperiode), which does not form a basis for permanent residence, granted under guidelines issued by Utlendingsdirektoratet (the Directorate of Immigration).

See recorded sources

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

It covers a foreign national staying in Norway where there are indications that the person is subjected to human trafficking and who is willing to receive help and follow up measures offered by the authorities.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

In-country only: the permit presupposes that the foreign national is staying in Norway. The application (and any application for exit and re-entry) is submitted to the police and decided by Utlendingsdirektoratet.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

After the reflection period a new permit (also not a basis for permanent residence) may be granted under guidelines issued by Utlendingsdirektoratet. The permit gives no right to re-enter Norway unless specifically stated or granted in advance, and leaving without re-entry permission can lead to revocation. Minor children in Norway of the person may be granted a permit with the same limitations as the parent.
