Which family relationships qualify?

A child of the widowed parent qualifies if the child is under 18 years of age and is not married or cohabiting. An adopted child also qualifies if the adoption is valid in the home country and approved by the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs (needed only where the adoption took place after one or both adoptive parents moved to Norway).

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

The child must document identity (a valid passport is usually valid proof) and that he or she is the parent's child, which can be done with a birth certificate; in some cases UDI may ask the child and parent to take a DNA test. If only one parent lives in Norway and the parents have joint parental responsibility, the other parent must consent to the child living in Norway. An adoption must be valid in the home country and, where it took place after an adoptive parent moved to Norway, approved by the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs.
