Which exceptional-talent, academic, scientific, artistic, technological, cultural or other profiles does the pathway target?

The route targets foreign researchers carrying out scientific-research activity under a contract with research entities entered in the register of the Ministry of Education and Science.

What achievements, recognition, awards, publications, reputation or other evidence establishes the required level?

The required level is shown by a certified copy of the researcher's education level (diploma of a completed first, second or third cycle of studies); the researcher's qualifications are assessed against the objectives of the research activity on the basis of the certified diploma copy.

Is an employer, nominator, recognised body, peer group or government endorsement required?

Yes. The researcher must attach a contract concluded with a scientific-research entity recorded in the register of the Ministry of Education and Science, and a confirmation from that entity assuming financial responsibility for the costs of stay, health insurance and return. On the entity's request, the Ministry of Education and Science confirms that the entity is recorded in its register. The research project must be accepted by the competent bodies of the entity after establishing the purpose and duration of the research and the securing of funds for it.

Can the holder change employer, work independently, establish a business or conduct other professional activity? What is the family position?

A foreign researcher may teach no more than eight hours per week, in line with the norms for higher-education institutions. A foreigner granted temporary residence for one year for scientific research has the right to family reunification with immediate family members who are foreigners, under the conditions of the law. The official source does not state whether the holder may change host, work independently or set up a business.

What duration, renewal and accelerated or normal longer-term residence pathway is officially stated?

Temporary residence for scientific research is granted for up to one year and is extended if the Article 79 conditions continue to be met. When the project period set in the contract ends, the researcher must leave North Macedonia. Permanent residence is not granted to a foreigner residing on a temporary permit issued for scientific research.
