A resident visa expires if the holder leaves New Zealand after its travel conditions expire, or is outside New Zealand when they expire. To get this visa after such an absence, the person must have been eligible, when the visa expired, for either a permanent resident visa based on commitment to New Zealand (they must then apply within 2 years) or a variation of travel conditions that would still be valid when they apply. They must apply before travelling to New Zealand.
