What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

The parent–child relationship is shown with documents such as adoption papers or other documents confirming the relationship; grandparents and post-death legal guardians must provide the parents' death certificates, and legal guardians must also show custody and the right to bring up the child until 18 (e.g. guardianship documents, proof the child lived with them, medical and school records); an included partner needs evidence of a genuine relationship.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

The sponsoring child must earn enough money (an amount based on the New Zealand median wage) to sponsor the parent, agree to meet the parent's living costs for the first 10 years of residence and to cover the costs of sending them home if necessary, and be able to give Inland Revenue tax statements as evidence of income. The official source does not state the exact minimum income figures.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The process starts with an expression of interest; selected applicants are invited to apply. The visa is indefinite, and a Permanent Resident Visa may be sought after 10 consecutive years.
