Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

It is not a direct application: the person is nominated by an approved community organisation (sponsor) or identified by the international referral partner, is then given a form to express interest, and INZ grants an invitation to apply for residence if it considers there is a credible chance of meeting the requirements; the person must be invited to apply.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

After the application is submitted, INZ asks the applicant to complete a medical examination, which they do not pay for; community-sponsored refugee applicants pay no immigration levy or visa application fee. A partner and dependent children aged 24 and younger can be included if requirements are met, and family must meet resident visa requirements. The visa lets holders live, work and study in New Zealand.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

Immigration New Zealand runs the process and arranges for refugee status to be assessed by the International Referral Partner; anyone whose refugee status was previously assessed by UNHCR or another government should provide evidence of that with their expression of interest.
