How long is the permission normally granted for, how is it renewed, and what longer-term residence direction exists if officially stated?

The total time that can be spent in New Zealand is 5 years for most jobs, or 3 years for jobs at ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5. If a visa is shorter than this maximum continuous stay, further AEWVs can be applied for up to that maximum. After staying the maximum time, the person must leave New Zealand for a required period, normally 12 months in a row, to be eligible for another AEWV. A resident visa may be possible depending on the job.
