What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

A residence permit with a 'temporary humanitarian' residence purpose for victims of human trafficking, or for people who witnessed human trafficking and reported it to the police; it is temporary because the organisations involved expect the situation to be short-term.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Covers victims of human trafficking and witnesses who reported it to the police; victims who did not report but cooperated in another way in the criminal investigation and prosecution of the trafficker; and victims who did not report and, because they are underage, ill or being threatened, are not able to cooperate.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Mostly through a police referral: if human trafficking was reported to the police, the police let the IND know and the IND decides; if the victim did not report but cooperated otherwise, the police report this to the IND, which decides; in the other situation the IND lists, the victim applies for the permit themselves, using form 'Application for the purpose of residence 'temporary humanitarian' (foreign national) 7526'.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm what happens after the protection request is made.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

For more information on the requirements and the process of the temporary humanitarian permits, the IND is the authority to contact.
