Permanent regular residence permit

The permanent regular residence permit is type II.

The residence permit for long-term EU residents is type V.

Are you applying for a permanent residence permit? Then the IND will first check if you meet the requirements for the residence permit for a long-term EU resident. You do not have to do anything for this yourself.

A permanent residence permit has no end date. The residence document is valid for 5 years and you can renew it every 5 years.

You have had a valid Dutch residence permit for at least 5 consecutive years. There are exceptions to the 5-year period for permanent residency.

Only years from the age of 8 on count towards the 5-year period. Children can only apply for a permanent residence permit, if they are at least 13 years old and have had a valid residence permit from the age of 8.

You had your main residence in the Netherlands  during the entire 5-year period.

You have always extended your residence permit in time.

You have always met the requirements for your residence permit. And you still meet those requirements.

You now have a valid residence permit for a non-temporary residence purpose.

What if you did not have a Dutch residence permit for 5 consecutive years? And you do meet all other requirements? In that case, you can still apply for a permanent residence permit in these situations.

You have Belgian or Luxembourgian nationality.

You are an (ex-)privileged person or their dependent family member.

You are a former Dutch citizen or you previously lived in the Netherlands. And one of these situations applies to you. You are an adult. Before you turned 18, you lived for 10 years or more in the Netherlands. During this period, you had a valid residence permit. You applied for a residence permit to return to the Netherlands before you turned 28. You are an adult. Before you turned 18, you lived in the Netherlands for 5 years or more. During this period, you had a valid residence permit. The Netherlands is the most appropriate country for you to live in. You are a former Dutch citizen. You lost your Dutch nationality or it was withdrawn. When you became a Dutch citizen, you had been living in the Netherlands with a valid residence permit for 5 years or more.

You have been outside the Netherlands for more than 6 continuous months. The IND counts these 6 months per calendar year (January to December). We do not add up separate periods. Your stay outside the Netherlands was not due to force majeure, but your own choice.

For 3 years in a row, you have been outside of the Netherlands for more than 4 continuous months. The IND counts these 4 months per calendar year (January to December). We do not add up separate periods. You have moved the centre of your activities abroad. This means that you cannot prove that you carry out the largest part of your activities in the Netherlands. The IND assesses, on a case-by-case basis, whether you have moved your main residence or center of activities outside the Netherlands.

Does the IND consider that you have moved your main residency abroad? In that case the IND can withdraw your residence permit. The IND can also decide not to extend your residence permit. Do you have a right of residence in the Netherlands under EU-rules? When moving main residency you will lose your right of residence.

You meet the general requirements that apply to everyone.

You meet the income requirements.

You have passed the civic integration exam at at least level A2. Or you have been exempted from the civic integration exam. Read more about civic integration and a permanent residence permit.

During the application for the residence permit you have now, you did not give any false information. And you did not withhold information.

You may await the processing of your application in the Netherlands. The IND must take a decision within 6 months. This is called the decision period.
