Which family relationships qualify?

The qualifying relatives are 'dependants': the person's spouse (other than a spouse from whom he or she is formally separated), the person's child under 18, or someone wholly dependent on the person for financial, psychological or physical support.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The sponsor must be a Nauruan citizen; the visa exists only by reference to the applicant's dependency on that citizen.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

  • The captured Regulations do not state any maintenance, accommodation or insurance responsibility for the Nauruan citizen or the dependant.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

An application may be made before, on or after entry into Nauru. The visa authorises the holder to enter and remain in Nauru as a resident; it may be granted for a limited or unlimited period, permits multiple entries and permits any activity for which a business visa may be granted. It expires for a spouse dependant on divorce or formal separation, and for any other dependant on ceasing to be a dependant, except for a residence visa granted to a child of a Nauruan citizen; the Minister may declare that a visa continues in force on conditions the Minister specifies.
