For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

A Mongolian visa is normally required: unless Mongolia's international treaties provide otherwise, a foreign national entering Mongolia must obtain a Mongolian visa, which is issued to holders of a valid passport or substitute travel document.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Evidence includes a passport (or valid substitute) valid for at least 180 days, an official invitation letter when travelling with family, and proof of sufficient funds if needed. The tourist group must share the same means of transport, route, travel programme and arrival/departure times at the border.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

K3 applicants (up to 3 days) apply at a Mongolian diplomatic mission or international border point; the visa is issued on the group leader's passport, with accompanying members on a list or appendix (standard 5 working days, expedited 3). Extension: under Article 19.2 of the law and Article 9.1 of the visa issuance regulation (Government Resolution No. 192 of 2021), a temporary visitor may extend the stay once for up to 30 days, applying at least 5 working days before the visa expires; a new extension may be requested 90 days after the previous one expired.
