Unless an international agreement of Mongolia provides otherwise, a foreign national entering Mongolia must obtain a Mongolian visa. Citizens of some countries can apply for an e-visa.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

K2 covers stays up to 90 days; a visa permission is needed if the intended stay is more than 31 days (up to 30 days without it). Unless treaties provide otherwise, a single/double-entry visa is valid for 150 days until entry and a temporary visitor may stay up to 90 days. A residence permit is needed if the intended stay is 180 days in one year.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Evidence includes a passport (or valid substitute) valid for at least 180 days, an official invitation letter when travelling with family, and other documents if needed (two-way flight ticket confirmation).

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

A K2 visa for up to 30 days is applied for at Mongolian diplomatic missions and international border points; for 31-90 days a visa permission is applied for through an inviting individual (standard 5 working days, expedited 3; fee 2500₮ standard, 5000₮ expedited). Extension: under Article 19.2 of the law and Article 9.1 of the visa issuance regulation (Government Resolution No. 192 of 2021), a temporary visitor may extend the stay once for up to 30 days, applying at least 5 working days before the visa expires; a new extension may be requested 90 days after the previous one expired.
