Which family relationships qualify?

On the G-1 page, "family member" means a foreign national's husband, wife, partner, father, mother, grandfather, grandmother and children (under the age of 18), with proof; the visa table lists G-1 as a related person of an immigrant ("Цагаачийн хамаарал бүхий этгээд").

  • The definition is generic to family-member permits.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The G applicant (holder of the G immigrant residence) is the principal: the official request must state the relationship with the G applicant and a copy of the G applicant's passport is required; the visa table marks this category as filed by the inviting individual ("Уригч иргэн мэдүүлнэ").

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

Under the Law on the Legal Status of Foreign Nationals the inviter is the person who guarantees financial resources for the invitee's stay (Art. 5.1.2) and must provide a guarantee of the financial sources required for the stay (Art. 10.1.2). The application requires an address statement from the local sum/khoroo authority. The official source does not state an amount or an insurance requirement.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Applicants apply within 21 days after entry at the Immigration Agency of Mongolia; first-time applicants register biometrics in person; standard processing is 60 days and the fee is 135.000₮. The permit period may not exceed the Article 27.1 period of the Law on the Legal Status of Foreign Nationals (5 years with possible extension for another 3 years). For a child under 18 of an immigrant visa holder, the permit period follows the parents' or guardians' permit period. After a refusal the same type may be re-applied for after 1 year. The official source does not state the rights granted or any independent status.
