A first-time resident receives a temporary permit valid for one year; after three years of residence an ordinary permit valid for three years may be issued, and after ten years of genuine residence a privilege permit valid for ten years (the ten-year requirement can be reduced to one year in special cases). Permits must be renewed on or before expiry, with proof of means of support (e.g. a reference issued by a Monaco bank) and accommodation; the temporary permit can only be renewed if the holder still meets the conditions.
