For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

Moldova publishes a list of nationalities that must hold a visa for entry, exit and transit, and a list of nationalities exempted from the visa requirement. Some visa-required nationals (footnoted) are exempt if they hold a residence permit or valid visa (not transit) issued by an EU member state, a Schengen state, the UK, the USA or Canada, during its validity.

Type C covers: official mission (C/MI); tourism (C/T); private visits to Moldovan citizens or foreign residents (C/V); business - economic or commercial purposes, contracts, negotiations, shareholders (C/A); freight or passenger transportation work (C/TS); participation in sports contests (C/S); and cultural, scientific and humanitarian activities, short-period medical treatment and other lawful activities (C/AD).

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

For tourism (C/T): passport issued in the past 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond departure; a GIM invitation if required, or a residence permit/valid visa (not transit) from an EU/Schengen state, the UK, the USA or Canada; a tourist accommodation reservation or a signed maintenance and accommodation commitment by a person from Moldova; a round-trip ticket (or driving licence, green card and vehicle registration if by car); proof of means of subsistence (bank statement issued no more than 10 days before submission, at least 30 euro/day, not less than 300 EUR for a stay shorter than 10 days); travel medical insurance of at least 30,000 euros covering the whole stay.
