How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Applications are made electronically through the IMUGA Portal; a foreign national already in the Maldives on another valid visa may change visa category after the marriage is legally registered. The visa permits the foreign spouse to reside in the Maldives. The initial visa is issued for one year and may then be renewed for periods of up to five years, subject to continued eligibility and Immigration approval; renewals are filed within one month before expiry. Residence eligibility can continue after dissolution of the marriage where the foreign national has a Maldivian child, or after the Maldivian spouse has died, where they remain eligible under the applicable laws.
