Which family relationships qualify?

This category covers a divorced, widowed or surviving former spouse of a Malaysian citizen with a Malaysian biological child and full or joint custody granted by a court.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The qualifying family link is to a Malaysian citizen. The applicant must already have spent at least 3 years in Malaysia on a valid long-term pass. A Malaysian sponsor aged at least 21 is required; applications in Sabah or Sarawak need a Malaysian sponsor of Sabah or Sarawak origin. Both applicant and sponsor must attend.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Apply at the nearest Immigration office or Immigration Headquarters in Putrajaya, with both applicant and sponsor present. The published Residence Pass rate covers five years. Holders may work, study and establish a business without changing pass, subject to other relevant authorities' conditions. This is a Residence Pass under Regulation 16A, not a grant of citizenship; a separate route to permanent residence or an automatic renewal entitlement is not described.
