What other major conditions apply, how is the status obtained, and what renewal, document-validity, retention or loss rules matter?
Applications are made at the Identification Services Bureau in person, or by post if living abroad; the spouse and minor children may be included. Required: permanent resident identity card, birth certificate, marital status proof, proof of a near relative who is a Chinese national (if claimed), proof of nationality, criminal record certificate, proof of ordinary residence and proof of income. Without a Chinese near relative, legitimate reasons are needed (e.g. long residence in Macao, growing up in Macao, knowledge of the Chinese language). If approved, proof of renouncing foreign nationality must be submitted within 6 months or the approval loses effect. Fee MOP1,000.00 (MOP500.00 per additional family member).

A. Original copy of the Macao SAR Permanent Resident Identity Card (the document will be photocopied and returned to the applicant after verification);
B. Birth certificate;
C. Proof of marital status of the applicant (except for a bachelor or a spinster);
D. Proof that the applicant has a near relative that is a Chinese national (for example, proof of family relationship, a photocopy of the near relative’s identity card);
E. Proof of nationality (except for stateless persons);
F. Certificate of criminal record (For instance, a valid “Certificate of Criminal Record” issued by the Macao SAR Government . In addition, if the applicant had lived in other countries or territories for 6 months or longer before settling in Macao, and he/she attained the age of 16 when living in such countries or territories, he/she should provide a certificate of criminal record within 90 days from its issuance date issued by the corresponding government.);
G. Proof of ordinary residence of the applicant, i.e. proof of property purchase (e.g. property tax, property deeds or Property Registration Report issued by the Real Estate Registry or proof of mortgage and monthly mortgage payment slip etc.) or proof of tenancy (the latest tenancy agreement). If the applicant is 18 years old or above and he/she is neither the landlord nor the tenant, the person who provides accommodation to the applicant is required to submit a declaration and a copy of identification documents.

If applicants do not have a near relative who is a Chinese national, they should have legitimate reasons to apply for naturalization as a Chinese national. Legitimate reasons include whether they have resided in Macao for a long time, whether they grew up in Macao, whether they have connection with China, whether they have the knowledge of the Chinese language, whether they are fond of Chinese culture and so on.

Once the application is approved and otherwise the applicant is a stateless person, the applicant must within 6 months from the date of notification of his/her approval, submit a document which proves that he/she has renounced his/her foreign nationality. Otherwise, the approval will lose its effectiveness.

There is a fee of MOP1,000.00. If the application includes the applicant’s spouse and children, the fee for each addional family member is MOP500.00.
