What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

This is the asylum procedure under the Liechtenstein Asylum Act: after a EURODAC/Dublin check, if Liechtenstein is responsible the office examines whether refugee status is met; if the Government recognises refugee status, asylum and a residence permit are granted.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

It covers persons whose asylum grounds are credible and meet refugee status; those not granted asylum whose removal is impossible, impermissible or unreasonable get temporary admission for one year, then reviewed; special rules apply for gender-specific persecution, unaccompanied minors and torture victims.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Protection is requested by lodging an asylum application (Asylgesuch); the Migration and Passport Office (APA) handles the whole procedure from the application onward, and applicants are then assigned to the reception centre. The official source does not state whether the application is lodged at the border or in-country.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Interviews, with an interpreter and a relief-organisation representative, check credibility; applicants must cooperate (identity, documents, grounds, evidence, biometrics); the Verein Flüchtlingshilfe Liechtenstein handles accommodation and care; the Government decides, and rejected applicants are usually ordered to leave. The official source does not state family handling during the procedure.
