For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

No visa is needed for up to 90 days in any 180 days for passport holders of the listed countries and territories (e.g. Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, UK, USA; some only with biometric passports). Holders of a Schengen C or D visa or a residence permit from another Schengen state may also enter.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

At the external border, travellers may be asked for proof of entry conditions such as a return ticket, hotel booking, host details, travel insurance and sufficient funds; entrants should have health insurance covering care in Latvia including repatriation.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Apply at the Latvian embassy/consulate in the country of legal residence, via VFS Global, or at another Schengen state's mission representing Latvia; lodge no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 calendar days before the trip; decision within 15 days (up to 45).     Visa applications shall be lodged no earlier than 6 months before the start of the intended visit (except seafarers in the performance of their duties – they can submit an application no earlier than 9 months before a trip) and no later than 15 calendar days before an intended trip. When issuing a multiple entry visa, the application for a new visa may be submitted in advance of the expiration of a previously issued visa, but not earlier than six months prior to the expiration of that visa. A decision on a visa application is made within 15 calendar days of the date of the lodging of an application. In individual cases, the processing time may be extended and take up to a maximum of 45 calendar days.
