What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

This is UNHCR registration of asylum seekers in Jordan: people who cannot return to their country of origin because they fear for their lives and wish to seek international protection from UNHCR must first register, and UNHCR records information about them, their family and their reasons for leaving.

Limits of the record
  • The same UNHCR page states that new asylum-seeker registration in Jordan has been suspended by a government decision since 23 January 2019; that sentence is already the citation of the R3 answer of this via and is not repeated here, so this box does not itself prove the suspension.
Registration is the first step to start communication between asylum seekers and UNHCR. If you cannot return to your country of origin because you fear for your life and wish to seek international protection from UNHCR, you must first go through the registration procedure, where the office will record information about you and your family, and the reasons for leaving your country of origin.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the population or circumstances the mechanism covers.

Limits of the record
  • Not established: the correction failed a second independent check (NAO_SUSTENTA: The earlier defect is only half fixed. The value says the page covers 'non-Syrian refugees', but C3 has no 'non-Syrian' (that word is only in the section heading, which is not quoted). No quote says current processing concerns only already registered cases (C1 says processing depends on each registered case's profile). The travel-risk sentence is a status consequence, not coverage.)

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

For existing registration services, call UNHCR on 064008000 to request an appointment. Urban services are centralised at Khalda in Amman; Zaatari and Azraq camp residents use their camp centres. Remote interviews and mobile missions serve designated southern and remote areas, whose residents should travel only when instructed. New asylum-seeker registration remains suspended.

For scheduled registration services, bring personal identification, the current or expired UNHCR document, the Syrian service card if applicable, and civil documents showing family changes. All family members must attend as instructed to confirm their presence in Jordan. Adults receive UNHCR asylum documentation; camp families receive proof of registration. These documents last one year and require annual renewal; UNHCR advises booking at least one month before expiry.
