What medical treatment/purpose does the route cover and which applicant role does it address: patient, donor or another medical purpose?

Covers foreign patients visiting Japan for medical purposes: any acts instructed by medical institutions in Japan, including full medical check-ups, medical examinations, dental care and recuperation (including hot-springs recuperation of 90 days or less). Multiple-entry visas may be issued to patients if necessary.

What acceptance, appointment, referral, treatment plan or healthcare-provider documentation is important?

The patient arranges medical services through a registered guarantor (e.g. medical coordinator or travel agency) and obtains, via the guarantor, a "Certificate from the medical institution about the planned medical services and references from the guarantor". For a multiple-entry visa, a Medical Treatment Plan from a physician in Japan (obtainable through a guarantor) must be presented.

    - (1) Foreign patients seeking medical treatment or other medical services at a Japanese medical institution should refer to the lists of guarantors (e.g., medical coordinators, travel agencies) registered for this visa scheme. - (2) The host medical institution is determined through consultation with guarantors that foreign patients select from the lists. In order to apply for a multiple visa, foreign patients are required to present a Medical Treatment Plan from a physician in Japan, which may be obtained through a guarantor.

How must treatment costs, living costs and insurance be demonstrated?

Documents showing the foreign patient's financial situation (e.g. a bank statement) must be presented. The official source does not state separately how treatment costs, living costs and insurance must be shown.

Limits of the record
  • Treatment costs, living costs and insurance are not addressed separately; only a financial-situation document is listed.

Can a carer/companion accompany the patient? Who qualifies and what separate/linked permission applies?

Yes. Not only family members but also non-family members may accompany the patient if necessary. Accompanying persons may be issued the same visa as the patient; they visit to take personal care of the patient and may not engage in income-generating business or paid activities.

How long can the patient stay, what happens if treatment continues longer, and what official extension or follow-up mechanism exists?

A multiple-entry visa may be issued only when each visit is 90 days or less; visa validity is up to 3 years if necessary; period of stay is 90 days, 6 months or 1 year, determined by the patient's clinical condition and other factors. The official source does not describe an in-country extension or what happens if treatment continues longer.
