The spouse or child of the entrepreneur applying for the Start-up Visa qualify as family members.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The supporting person is a foreign entrepreneur under the Foreign Entrepreneur Activity Promotion Programme, listed by ISA under Designated Activities. The programme permits business-preparation activities under the management and support of a local public body or private operator approved by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. The separate family column asks for a copy of the supporter’s residence card or passport.

Limits of the record
  • The ministerial public notice contains additional conditions for the entrepreneur and family; these are not fully enumerated by this checklist.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

The family-member checklist requires one document proving the relationship between the applicant and the supporting entrepreneur, such as a marriage certificate or birth certificate, plus a copy of the supporter’s residence card or passport. Documents in a foreign language require a Japanese translation; certificates issued in Japan must have been issued within the preceding three months. The authority may request further material during examination.

Limits of the record
  • This checklist does not establish all substantive dependency, custody or qualifying-family conditions set out in the separately referenced ministerial public notice.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

The separate family-member column requires one set of material demonstrating the costs of the stay. This is listed for entry, change of status, extension and acquisition of status; the page does not give a numeric maintenance amount in that family checklist.

Limits of the record
  • A specific maintenance amount, accommodation standard, insurance requirement and full allocation of sponsor responsibilities are not established by this page; absence of those rules is not inferred.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

For new entry to Japan under this status, a Certificate of Eligibility application is made; the visa application lists passport, visa application form, photograph and the Certificate of Eligibility (original or copy). The period of stay listed for the Start-up Visa is 6 months. The official source does not state the family member's rights or a path to independent or longer-term status.

Limits of the record
  • The 6-month period is stated for the Start-up visa page generally, not specifically for family members.
  • Rights of the family member (e.g. work) and any path to independent or longer-term status are not stated.

These are the answers currently recorded in the catalogue. A missing or partial answer is not an eligibility decision.
