What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Refugee resettlement: refugees who fled their country of origin and are receiving temporary protection in a neighbouring country's camps etc. are moved to a third country that has agreed to accept them and are allowed to settle there. Third-country resettled refugees are cited as an example of Long-Term Resident (Teijusha) status holders.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Japan began resettlement as a pilot in fiscal 2010; from fiscal 2015 it accepted about 30 Myanmar refugees a year staying temporarily in Malaysia; from fiscal 2020 the scope was widened to refugees staying temporarily in the Asian region (any country or region of origin), single persons as well as families, up to about 60 people a year (intake once or twice a year).

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

It is not an ordinary visa application: refugees are selected for resettlement, with the Immigration Services Agency mainly responsible for the selection procedure and post-arrival support, under coordination by the government's Refugee Policy Coordination Council. The official source does not state how candidates are referred for selection.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

After acceptance, resettled refugees can take a settlement support programme of Japanese-language education and life guidance aimed at employment and stable independent life; where necessary after individual review, living expenses are paid only during the programme period of up to 1 year. Accepted resettled refugees may bring family members to Japan if requirements are met.
