Which exceptional-talent, academic, scientific, artistic, technological, cultural or other profiles does the pathway target?

J-Skip (Special Highly Skilled Professional system, introduced in April 2023) grants the Highly Skilled Professional status, separately from the points system, on the basis of education or work history plus annual income above a set level. This route is the advanced academic research type (HSP (i)(a)): research, research guidance or education under a contract with a public or private organisation in Japan (e.g. university professors and researchers).

What achievements, recognition, awards, publications, reputation or other evidence establishes the required level?

Separately from the points system, for the academic research type: a master's degree or higher and annual income of ¥20 million or more, or 10 or more years of experience in the intended work and annual income of ¥20 million or more.

Is an employer, nominator, recognised body, peer group or government endorsement required?

The research, research guidance or education must be carried out under a contract with a public or private organisation in Japan; the Certificate of Eligibility application can be filed by, among others, the receiving organisation of the foreign national due to enter.

Can the holder change employer, work independently, establish a business or conduct other professional activity? What is the family position?

Holders may carry out combined activities across statuses; spouses may work, parents may accompany under conditions, and domestic workers may be employed. Spouses may work more than 28 hours a week in activities of Researcher, Instructor, Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, Entertainer, Professor, Artist, Religious Activities, Journalist and Skilled Labor even without the education requirements; with annual household income of 30 million yen or more up to 2 foreign domestic workers may be employed.
