Which family relationships qualify?

A spouse or child supported by a person designated for the activity of the preceding notice item (the Japanese-university-graduate activity), carrying out daily activities, qualifies (Designated Activities notice item 47).

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The sponsor must hold Designated Activities No. 46: a person meeting the Annex 11 requirements (e.g. graduated from a Japanese university with a degree) working as a full-time employee of a Japanese organisation designated by the Minister of Justice under contract, including work requiring smooth communication in Japanese.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

One of the following proves the relationship: a family register (koseki) extract, a certificate of acceptance of marriage notification, a marriage certificate, a birth certificate, or equivalent documents.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

The family member must be supported by the sponsor. Documents: the sponsor's residence card or passport copy or resident record, and proof of the sponsor's occupation and income (employment certificate plus residence-tax and tax payment certificates); these sponsor documents are not needed if the family member applies together with the sponsor.
