What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Not asylum: a residence permit for foreign victims of illegal intermediation and labour exploitation, labelled 'casi speciali', valid one year and renewable for one year or longer where needed to complete integration measures or for reasons of justice.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Foreign workers subjected in Italy to violence, abuse or labour exploitation ascertained in police operations, investigations or proceedings for the offence under article 603-bis of the Criminal Code, who usefully contribute to bringing out the facts and identifying those responsible; also members of their family unit (persons linked by marriage, civil union, kinship or affinity within the second degree).

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

In Italy: the Questore issues the permit immediately on proposal of the judicial authority; if the judicial opinion is delayed, the worker may apply directly at the Questura while asking the Prosecutor's Office for a proposal or the Labour Inspectorate for an opinion.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

While awaiting the permit, the worker holding the application receipt may stay lawfully and work temporarily. The permit gives access to welfare services and study, registration as unemployed, or employed and self-employed work (subject to minimum age). People may be received in the SAI system from the time the Prosecutor's proposal or the Labour Inspectorate's opinion is issued.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

Competent channels: the judicial authority, the Questura, and the National Labour Inspectorate, which can report exploitation to the judicial authority or the Questore and give its opinion on the permit. After the opinion, the person contacts the Questura for an appointment to file the application.
