What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Not asylum: a residence permit for victims of domestic violence, labelled 'casi speciali', valid one year.

See recorded sources

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the population or circumstances the mechanism covers.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

In Italy: the Questore issues the permit with the favourable opinion of, or on proposal from, the judicial authority handling the case.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

The permit gives access to welfare services and study, registration as unemployed, or employed and self-employed work (subject to minimum age); holders may receive the Assegno di inclusione. On expiry it may be converted into a work permit or a study permit if enrolled in a regular course.

See recorded sources

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

Anti-violence centres, local social services or specialised victim-support services: when they identify violence during their assistance, the Questore may issue the permit based on their report, with the opinion of the competent judicial authority.
