What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

A residence permit for medical care (cure mediche), for the time attested by suitable medical certification, for women in the circumstances of art. 19(2)(d) of the Consolidated Immigration Act: women who are pregnant or within six months after the birth of the child they care for, whom art. 19(2) lists among persons who may not be expelled (save art. 13(1) cases).

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

In-country request made directly at the Questura (police immigration office): requests for medical-care (cure mediche) permits are filed directly with the Questura, not through post offices.

Limits of the record
  • the Questura rule is stated for 'cure mediche' permits in general, not specifically for the pregnancy case

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm what happens after the protection request is made.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

The competent authority is the Questore (provincial police headquarters), which issues the permit when the law prohibits expulsion.
