What combination of travel, work, study or training does the programme permit?

The working-holiday residence permit allows the holder to work in Italy, and hiring needs only the employer's standard mandatory employment notification (no work nulla osta). Working-holiday visas allow work in Italy for a maximum of six months in a year and no more than three months with the same employer. The official source does not state study or training permissions.

What are the defining limitations: quota, ballot, previous participation, employer limits, study limits or equivalent?

Applicants must never have obtained an Italian working-holiday visa before. Under DPR 394/1999, working-holiday visas allow work in Italy for a maximum of six months in a year and no more than three months with the same employer (Australia is listed among the operative agreements; only the Korea and Japan agreements derogate). An annual number of working-holiday visas is set under the bilateral agreements.

What funds, insurance, onward travel or similar preparation is particularly important?

Applicants need a bank statement in their own name covering the previous 30 days showing at least the equivalent of €10,000 for a 365-day visa (or proportionally less); this is compulsory even if travel is prepaid, and sponsor statements are not accepted. They also need a valid inbound and outbound ticket (or proof of funds to buy the outbound one), health cover through Medicare for the first six months under the Australia–Italy Reciprocal Health Care Agreement plus travel health insurance for any further period, and a passport valid at least 3 months beyond the intended return date.

Hard-copy of valid inbound and outbound ticket indicating date of entry to Italy. If only an inbound ticket is available, proof of sufficient funds to purchase the outbound one must be provided. Medicare card to cover the first six months of stay under the Australia–Italy Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, and travel health insurance certificate/card covering the duration of all exceeding periods. Private insurance may also be purchased for the entire duration of the visa requested. Hard-copy of bank statement in the applicant’s name. Bank statement must show a list of bank transactions for the previous 30 days’ prior visa application. Amount required is at least the equivalent of €10,000 for a visa of 365 days, or a proportional amount if staying less (i.e. €10,000/12 x number of months). This requirement is compulsory even when all travel expenses have already been paid for. Sponsor bank statements are not accepted.
