What medical treatment/purpose does the route cover and which applicant role does it address: patient, donor or another medical purpose?

A foreigner who intends to receive medical treatment in Italy, and any accompanying person, can obtain a specific entry visa and the related residence permit for medical treatment. Transfer for treatment in Italy with a medical-treatment permit is also allowed within humanitarian programmes, with prior authorisation of the Ministry of Health in agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This route addresses the accompanying person of the patient.

What acceptance, appointment, referral, treatment plan or healthcare-provider documentation is important?

The application requires medical documentation issued in the country of residence certifying the illness, and a declaration from the chosen Italian public or private health facility (a private one must be accredited with the National Health Service) stating the type of treatment, start date, duration and presumed cost.

How must treatment costs, living costs and insurance be demonstrated?

Treatment costs: a certificate from the Italian facility confirming a deposit of at least 30% of the presumed cost of the treatment, or alternatively a specific regional resolution or a specific Ministry of Health authorisation within humanitarian programmes. Living costs: proof of sufficient resources in Italy to pay the remaining medical costs, board and lodging outside the facility, and repatriation of the patient and any companion. Insurance: any companion of the patient needs health insurance with minimum coverage of €30,000 covering emergency hospitalisation and repatriation costs.

Can a carer/companion accompany the patient? Who qualifies and what separate/linked permission applies?

A possible accompanying person can obtain a specific entry visa and the related residence permit for medical treatment. The application must document board and lodging in Italy for the companion; the companion needs health insurance with minimum coverage of €30,000 for emergency hospitalisation and repatriation, and a return booking or ticket (or proof of own means of transport).
