What family, citizenship, ethnic, historical or former-resident connection creates access to this route?

Under the Law of Return (5710-1950), Jews, their spouses, children, grandchildren and their grandchildren's spouses are entitled to immigrate to Israel, other than several exceptions detailed in the Law of Return. Foreign nationals staying in Israel who are eligible for status under the Law of Return can apply to change their status to immigrant.

What records are central to proving the lineage or historical connection?

Applicants attach original certificates proving Judaism or Law of Return eligibility, with further supporting documents; their original documents, duly authenticated and with a notarised Hebrew translation, including a recent civil-status certificate, birth certificate, proof of any name change and a marriage certificate if married. Nationals of Commonwealth of Independent States countries are also referred to Nativ (Prime Minister's Office) and invited to an interview.

What application progression, residence obligations, family consequences or further citizenship/residence possibilities follow?

Applicants complete the online application for immigrant status and attach the required documents; they receive an email confirming submission, office staff check the documents, and once the Jewish Agency or Nativ has determined eligibility for Aliyah and no obstacle is found, applicants are invited to a Population and Immigration Authority office. An application for an immigrant visa or status is exempt from fees. Persons with new-immigrant status are entitled to special assistance from government ministries and other bodies.
