What exact activity, role or purpose qualifies?

The route covers voluntary fieldwork that contributes directly to the sponsor's charitable purpose and does not fill a permanent position, even temporarily.

What organisation, institution, religious body, charity, teacher or host must support the activity?

A licensed sponsor (the charity) must issue a certificate of sponsorship before the application, and the work must relate to the sponsor organisation's work.

What proves the placement, role, affiliation, experience or cultural/religious/voluntary activity?

A valid Certificate of Sponsorship reference that names the applicant and confirms sponsorship in the Charity Workers subcategory, checked through the Certificate of Sponsorship Checking Service.

A Certificate of Sponsorship reference number will only be considered to be valid if the number supplied links to a Certificate of Sponsorship Checking Service reference that names the applicant as the migrant and confirms that the Sponsor is sponsoring him as a Tier 5 (Temporary Worker) Migrant in the subcategory indicated by the migrant in his application for entry clearance or leave.

Can the person receive salary, pocket money, accommodation, meals or reimbursement? Can they undertake other work?

The work must not be paid or remunerated, including benefits in kind, except for reasonable expenses under section 37 of the Minimum Wage Act 2001. Leave conditions allow supplementary employment (not for international-agreement service suppliers).

How long can they stay, can they change host/activity, can family accompany, and can the status be extended?

Up to 12 months (the engagement plus 14 days before and after, whichever is shorter). Extensions require sponsorship in the same Tier 5 subcategory. Partners of Charity Workers are covered by the Part 8 dependant rules. The route does not lead to settlement. The official source does not state whether the host can be changed.
