What exact activity, role or purpose qualifies?

A structured volunteering activity in an approved sector, including arts, heritage and culture, done for no financial gain and for the benefit of society.

What organisation, institution, religious body, charity, teacher or host must support the activity?

The sponsor must be an eligible organisation: a non-governmental, not-for-profit, voluntary or charitable body that is established and active in Ireland and listed on the Charities Regulator's Public Register of Charities. The sponsor must cooperate with the immigration authorities.

What proves the placement, role, affiliation, experience or cultural/religious/voluntary activity?

A sponsorship letter with the organisation's full contact details, a named contact, and its charity and tax numbers, stating the person's intended role, why they are needed for the volunteer position and how they are suitably qualified. The sponsor must confirm Garda vetting for roles involving children or vulnerable adults.

Can the person receive salary, pocket money, accommodation, meals or reimbursement? Can they undertake other work?

No paid work of any kind. The sponsor must fully support the volunteer and give a full breakdown of direct payments (for example, an allowance) and indirect payments (for example, rent and bills), plus who covers day-to-day expenses such as travel and meals.

How long can they stay, can they change host/activity, can family accompany, and can the status be extended?

An initial 1 year, up to 2 years in total, with a possible 1-year extension with the same sponsor if there is a genuine need. The volunteer can change organisation once in any 12-month period. No family members can come along.
