What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Subsidiary protection is a form of international protection (asylum) that the International Protection Office examines in the same procedure as refugee status, under Irish and EU law (including the European Union (Subsidiary Protection) Regulations).

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

People whose life or freedom would be in danger if they returned to their country and whose own authorities cannot or will not protect them. International protection covers a real risk of serious harm, not only persecution.

Limits of the record
  • The captured pages do not give the legal definition of serious harm or say how it differs from the refugee test.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

The same application is used: it is registered in person at the Citywest Reception Centre in Saggart, and the authorities then assess which type of protection, if any, applies.

Limits of the record
  • There is no separate application for subsidiary protection; the captured pages do not describe one.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

At registration, fingerprints, photographs and identity documents are taken, and applicants are asked about family in Ireland or another EU+ country. Eurodac fingerprint data can help find family members in EU+ countries. A personal interview follows; missing it without a serious reason can mean the application is treated as withdrawn. Free legal counselling is available.

  • The captured pages do not list the specific material supports.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

The International Protection Office makes first-instance decisions on protection claims. Applicants who disagree can appeal to TARA (the Tribunal for Asylum and Returns Appeals), which reviews the decision. A free legal representative can be requested from the Legal Aid Board.

Limits of the record
  • No UNHCR channel or fraud/scam warning was found on the captured IPO pages.

These are the answers currently recorded in the catalogue. A missing or partial answer is not an eligibility decision.
