For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

No Irish visa is needed for nationals of the listed countries who have entered the UK on certain UK short-stay visas; they may instead use the time remaining on their UK leave. A UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) cannot be used for the programme, and a person holding only an ETA needs a separate Irish visa.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The programme is for visiting Ireland. It works with UK short-stay visit visas, except those issued to visitors in transit or visitors seeking to marry or enter a civil partnership; long-term UK visas (e.g. long-term student or family-reunification) do not qualify.

Limits of the record
  • The page does not list which activities (e.g. tourism, business) are permitted during the visit to Ireland itself.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The journey to Ireland must take place within the dates of the UK permission. The maximum stay in Ireland is 90 days or the time remaining on the UK permission, whichever is less. Each separate period of UK leave (up to 180 days each time) requires a prior legal entry into the UK before travelling to Ireland, whatever the duration of the UK visa.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

At the Irish border, the traveller must show at least a passport, a visa if required, and a boarding card. Other useful documents include an itinerary, proof of sufficient funds, health insurance covering the stay, accommodation details and invitations. Even with a valid visa, entry may be refused if the Immigration Officer is not satisfied by the documents or explanations.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

No Irish application is needed: the traveller must first land in and be lawfully admitted to the UK on an eligible UK short-stay visa, then travel to Ireland. UK ETAs cannot be used. People with long-stay UK permission must apply for an Irish visa (without a fee).
