What other major conditions apply, how is the status obtained, and what renewal, document-validity, retention or loss rules matter?
Under the Foreign Residence Law No. 76 of 2017, a foreigner who wants to stay longer than the ordinary visa allows must obtain a residence card from the residence officer before that period ends, for no more than one year. An extension for a further year may be requested 30 days before expiry, and this may be repeated as long as the reason for granting residence continues. The Director General of Residence may refuse residence or its extension in the public interest; the foreigner may object to the Minister within 15 days of notification, and the objection must be answered within 30 days. The Minister may cancel a foreigner's residence at any time before it ends for public-interest reasons. A resident whose residence has ended must hand in the residence card when seeking an exit visa at the border point. If the foreigner leaves Iraq for more than 6 months, the remaining period is cancelled and a new residence document is needed on return. Loss of a passport, travel document or residence card must be reported to the residence officer within 3 days.
