For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

No visa is needed in advance for nationals of certain countries under the A1 visa-free facility (Bebas Visa Wisata), which allows tourism, family visits, meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions or similar events, and transit to another country. The page does not list the eligible nationalities. Stateless persons and holders of non-national travel documents (temporary or emergency passports, titre de voyage, certificate of identity, laissez-passer or similar) cannot use the facility. The page lists two ways of using it: on arrival, or before arrival (electronic) by filling in an electronic form at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Permission is given on arrival: the immigration officer at the counter records an entry permit that also serves as the stay permit. Alternatively, the traveller fills in an electronic form at evisa.imigrasi.go.id before arrival and receives an electronic entry mark that is also the stay permit and can be used at autogates. The fee is Rp0. The stay cannot be extended or changed into another stay permit.
