Which travellers require a transit visa/permission and which officially documented exemptions are important?

A transit visa is for a foreigner travelling through India to a destination outside India. A foreigner in direct transit by air who does not leave the specified precincts of the airport does not need a transit visa, nor does one who does not leave the ship while it halts at an Indian port.

Can the traveller remain airside, and under what circumstances must immigration control be crossed?

A transit visa is not required for a foreigner in direct transit by air travelling onward through India, provided he/she does not leave the specified precincts of the airport. A transit visa is also not required for a foreigner who does not leave the ship while it halts at an Indian port.

What officially documented baggage collection, terminal, separate-ticket or self-transfer situations affect the immigration requirement?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the baggage, terminal-change and self-transfer rules.

What maximum transit period, overnight, airport-change or multiple-stop rules matter?

Transit stay may not exceed 3 days per journey (two entries possible in the same journey, 3 days each). The visa is ordinarily valid for a single journey with entry within 15 days of issue; only direct transit is covered and the period is not extendable except in extreme emergency (strike, traffic disruption, inclement weather, illness). The official source does not state overnight or airport-change rules.

A transit visa will ordinarily be valid for a single journey and for entry within 15 days from the date of issue. If the journey is not performed within this period, a fresh transit visa will be required. A transit visa is only valid for direct transit, which cannot be more than 3 days for each visit. This period is not extendable except in case of extreme emergency like strike, traffic disruption, inclement weather, illness, etc.

If permission is required, what permission is it, where/how is it obtained, and what core onward-travel evidence is required?

Permission is a Transit visa (granted for 15 days, single or double entry, not extendable in India); the listed document is a return/onward journey ticket. Visas for India are granted by an authorised Indian representative abroad.
