For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

A regular pilgrim visa issued under the 1974 Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines is required; holders of Pakistani passports or of Pakistani origin must apply for a regular visa at an Indian Mission (e-Visa not available).

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The current Gaborone consular table lists Pilgrim Visa P-2 for Pakistan nationals coming under the Religious Protocol. The 2018 Annex used code PG-1; the purpose remains the same in the current table, but the code has changed.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

The Pakistan annex requires, for all visa categories, a sponsorship certificate attested by an authorised officer in India, with a self-attested copy of that officer's photo ID. The official source does not state passport, funds, accommodation, insurance or onward-travel evidence.

    Documents required for the grant of Visa for all categories Sponsorship certificate as in Appendix-I should be attested by an authorized officer in India. A copy of the photo identity card of the concerned officer issuing the Sponsorship Certificate, duly self attested by the officer concerned, should be attached with the Sponsorship Certificate.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Applications must be made at least 45 days before the tour, and visas are issued at least ten days before travel. Holders of Pakistani passports or of Pakistani origin apply for a regular visa at an Indian Mission. The pilgrim visa cannot be extended.
