Which exceptional-talent, academic, scientific, artistic, technological, cultural or other profiles does the pathway target?

The Journalist Visa targets professional journalists, photographers, documentary film producers or directors (other than of commercial films), radio/TV organisation representatives and travel writers/travel promotion photographers; correspondents, columnists, cartoonists, editors or owners of media associations/companies; and journalists visiting India for other purposes such as attending a conference, tourism or meeting relatives.

What achievements, recognition, awards, publications, reputation or other evidence establishes the required level?

J-1 is for foreign audio-visual or print media journalists accredited in India, and J-2 for audio-visual or print media journalists visiting India. The official source does not state any awards, publications or other evidence of professional standing.

Is an employer, nominator, recognised body, peer group or government endorsement required?

Resident correspondents of foreign media are issued the visa on the basis that they will apply for accreditation to the Press Information Bureau in New Delhi. Proposals for shooting a documentary or advertisement film are processed by the External Publicity Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, and Indian Missions issue Journalist visas to the crew after obtaining clearance from MEA.

Can the holder change employer, work independently, establish a business or conduct other professional activity? What is the family position?

Accompanying family members may receive an appropriate dependent visa co-terminous with the correspondent's visa. Visits to restricted/protected areas, Jammu & Kashmir or the North Eastern States require a special permit through the MEA External Publicity Division. What duration, renewal and accelerated or normal longer-term residence pathway is officially stated?

Journalist visas are granted for up to three months' stay; a six-month visa (single or double entry) is granted only in rare and exceptional cases, and multiple entry only with MEA approval. Resident correspondents get an initial three-month triple-entry visa. The official source does not state a renewal or longer-term residence path.
