What family, citizenship, ethnic, historical or former-resident connection creates access to this route?

The X-1 Entry visa is for a Person of Indian Origin who does not hold an OCI card. A Person of Indian Origin means a person who at any time held an Indian passport, or a person who, or either of whose parents, grandparents or great-grandparents, was born in and was permanently resident in India.

How far back can the qualifying connection extend, and what important transmission limitations exist?

The connection can extend to great-grandparents who were born in and permanently resident in India, provided neither was at any time a citizen of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Pakistan or Sri Lanka or any other country specified by the Government of India. Does the pathway result in a visa, residence permit, right of return, citizenship or another status?

The pathway results in an Entry ('X-1') visa, granted for five years at a time with multiple entry. Certain other visas held by Persons of Indian Origin who are entitled to an Entry visa may be converted to an X-1 visa by the FRRO/FRO concerned.

What application progression, residence obligations, family consequences or further citizenship/residence possibilities follow?

After 5 years from the issue of the X-1 visa, any further extension is referred by the FRRO/FRO to the Ministry of Home Affairs, which grants one year; subsequent extensions of up to another 5 years at a time may be granted by FRROs/FROs, and the same procedure applies to further extensions. The spouse and children of a Person of Indian Origin may be granted an X-2 visa for five years at a time with multiple entry. The official source does not state residence obligations or any citizenship or permanent residence possibilities.
